Planters for gardens and indoors

You can put them anywhere

Our planters and slab pots are ornamental as well as practical objects used as umbrella or walking stick stands, as indoor plant displays, or just to brighten up a corner in a room.

Unlike many planters ours are colourful and bold, and when placed strategically in the garden or patio or terrace, they can brighten the space around them as well as complement the plants inside. They work well in small to medium spaces, or in clusters and groups.

They can also light up indoor areas such as conservatories and sitting rooms, we make them in the Brushstroke Blues range, as well as in the Valencia (honey and ochre) and Manhattan (geometric) ranges.

  • The image shows a Brushstroke Blues planter. It can be used for outdoors as it has drainage holes at its base. The blue of the ceramics is visually refreshing in this setting, unlike, say, a plain terracota pot would be. They really can brighten the space around them as well as complement the plants inside, and work well in small to medium spaces, or in clusters and groups.

Our slab pots and planters are ornamental as well as practical objects, and look good either indoors or out.

  • Beautiful hand made ceramic planter for outdoors or indoors, hand painted and unique, will set off any space in your garden or house, specially with primarily yellow or warm coloured plants in them.

  • A fine umbrella or walking stick stand for any hallway or lobby. We hand make our stands and planters out of four large, rolled ‘slabs’ of clay and it takes two of us to put the pieces together to form our distinctive trade-mark ‘twist’ in their design. This one measures 20 x 20 cms at the base, and tapers off to a height of 54 cms.

  • These lovely ceramic stands have a number of uses. They look fine in a hall way or by an entrance as umbrella or walking stick stands. They are robust and frost proof so can easily be put out in the garden as a planter too. If you are looking for a bold statement then imagine it as a centrepiece of a side table or counter, or on the floor next to the fire place, filled with dried sunflowers. The blues really stand out and brighten any space.

This slightly “retro” stand and planter measures 18 x 18 cms at the base, and tapers off to a height of 41 cms.

Planters and pots for gardens and indoors

We use Valentine Grogged Porcelain which is worked and put through the roller. These rolled pieces are cut into the shapes required. Two people are needed, one to hold the pieces in place and the other to apply the clay slip between the pieces before pressing both edges together.

How they are made

After a planter pot is bisque fired, the oxides are painted on. For the Manhattan range we use Tin with Chrome, Cobalt Blue with Red iron Oxide, Cobalt with Nickel, Chromium Oxide Potash with Tin Oxide, and a variety of stains. Every slab pot is unique and will contain the same colours with variations in brushstroke and hue. A clear glaze is poured on and it is once more placed in the kiln for the final firing at about 1270 degrees. At this temperature the ceramic becomes vitrified, which means that it is robust and, if placed in the garden, can stand up to extremes of weather without cracking.

Indoors or out

They may be planters and pots for indoors and outdoors, but they are also flexible enough to be used in other ways, such as to display and hold sweets. Think of other ways of using what is potentially a centrepiece for any table, and a subject of conversation as much as its contents are.
